My little boy firmly believes that all food should be sweet.
Last week I made a chicken and leek pie. Sounds delicious, right? And it was. But my 11 month old decided it needed a little… seasoning. In the form of a blueberry yogurt topping.

I can’t be the only one whose baby opens his mouth like a hungry chick, only to take a bite of lovingly prepared mush and then pull a face that says WHY ARE YOU TRYING TO POISON ME. I’ve tried zooming like an aeroplane, chugging like a train… you name it, all the tricks in my “please eat this” armoury have been deployed at one moment or another. But unless I’m swooping in with a shovelful of summer fruit porridge, I’m faced with an hour-long stand off that ends with a fractious baby and a well-fed spaniel.

If you too are of the sweet-toothed baby brigade, I’ve got a recipe for you.
- 2 slices of wholemeal bread
- Big ol’ spoonful of smooth peanut butter
- 1/3 of a mashed banana
Slap it together and go.

No, it’s not exactly a health food. But it’s got carbs, fats, protein and fibre in, so it’s not terrible either. And since all* babies are obsessed with banana, they’ll probably at least give it a try.
*in a study of one 11 month old, 100% of participants cited banana as their all-time favourite food
